Winter fishing

Posted by shawn on January 9, 2017

Winter time you can expect lower tides and with north/northeast winds it helps flush the water out creating negative tides. On negative tides it concentrates fish in deeper water like pot holes, channel edges and sand bars.

Trout have showed up in good numbers throughout the bay with nice slot sizes and a handful of “gator” Trout. Crystal River has been on fire with upper and over slot with some reports of close to 30” being caught. Topwater Gill Reaper Spitter has been very productive and popping cork with a live shrimp or gulp.

Redfish bite has been productive on the flats on higher tides and moving into potholes on lower tides. Crystal River Redfish has been very productive in the creeks and around oyster bars.Topwater Gill Reaper Spitter in the morning and then switching to a jig when the sun is high and starts to warm up the flat.

Snook are still biting strong in the back country, creeks and rivers. The incoming tide has been the strongest in good movement of water with structure. Live white bait or suspending baits in a mullet or whitebait pattern.

10/16/2015 Fishing report

The Snook and Redfish bite is on! There are multiple Redfish schools throughout Tampa Bay right now. It can be a waiting game but the outcome will be rewarding. Look for good ambush points like oyster bars, Mangroves, etc. with Mullet schools in the area. We’re using cut lady fish, live pinfish or white bait.

I’ve been focusing in the back country and river mouths for Snook. This is the time of year they really start fattening up for winter. Structure and moving water is always the key for finding Snook.
